No room is complete until the windows have been treated or decorated in some way, and that usually means curtains and blinds. Many times in my career here I have heard people say that curtains will not be necessary as they have shutters for privacy, but their rooms always look unfinished and bare no matter how much the spend on the rest of the décor.

Unless there is a spectacular view through a large picture window a curtain less window will feel cold and uninviting. A bare window is like giving a present without the wrapping paper and card.

Window Treatments can also bring warmth and colour to otherwise plain white walls which are the norm here. Simply adding curtains in rich textures and bold colours will completely transform a room.

The good news is that the prices of bespoke curtains and blinds will be cheaper than the UK, you will be able to curtain an entire apartment here for the price my sister charges for one window in London.

Homepack has a range a range of fabrics and voiles to choose from, and the choice will be daunting. Take samples of upholstery fabrics and wall colour or even a mood board that you have made up to the shop to help you in your decision. Just remember when making your choice you must consider that you do not want to make the window the focal point of the room, they should merely be the backdrop for the rest of the room.
Curtains can help in your daily life so give some thought to the function and position of the room, for example bedrooms that face south may need special blackout material to keep out the sun.  In Cyprus heavier curtains can be used to keep houses cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter by keeping the heat in. Traditional houses with smaller windows may be darker than newer properties, so lighter voiles or nets may be appropriate.
If you would like curtains for privacy and security, choose a heavier curtain with a lining. You can add tiebacks for occasions when you would like to look out of the window: a ground floor flat on a big site will need more opacity coverings than a third floor bedroom with no neighbours.

How the window opens may also affect your choice, sliding window are quite easy but inward opening window may cause some difficulties especially if you choose blinds as you must ensure that when the blind is up that you can still open the window.

Cleaning will affect also your choice, especially if you are going to rent your properties out regularly. You will need to choose an easily cleanable fabric that will not shrink in the wash. In Cyprus where the mop and bucket takes the place of the vacuum cleaner you may want drapes to be shorter than you would normally have them in England so they do not get dirtied by an enthusiastic cleaners mop action.
If your house is in direct sunlight and you have no shutters you will need substantial protection for your furniture. I have seen sofas and furniture fade through the effect of the strong Cyprus sun over the course of only a year and that was with closed curtains. For the best protection, consider heavy curtains lined with a blackout material.
